In Dr. Seuss’ illustrious children’s book, Green Eggs and Ham, Mr. “Sam” Sam-I-Am is on a mission to help a character try out a new dish called green eggs and ham. Similarly SAM (South African Market) in Cape Town, South Africa is also on a mission to get you to try out new things, primarily unique items crafted by some of South Africa’s top designers and creatives.
Owner Naomi Bossert started SAM to display and help young designers to build up their brands and grow them. Whether you’re on the hunt for African and South African fashion, womenswear, menswear, accessories, homewares, furniture, decor, stationery, art and illustrations or refined jewelry you’re sure to find at least a few unique bits and bobbles that catch your eye at SAM.
SAM also has a really neat range of 35mm diapositive film necklaces from a Cape Town brand called Yellow Jewellery. Yellow Jewellery’s pieces come in a vintage cassette box instead of your usual cardboard jewelry box which is a pretty rad way of packaging pieces.
Hand painted totes and pouches as well as scarves, shoes and even interior design pieces are also available at SAM. If you’re looking for examples of the best of the best in South African design, head to SAM and by the end of your visit you’ll probably be saying, “They are so good so good you see!”
