Behind the Seams – João Rôlo Couture in Lisbon, Portugal

Our first thought when we stumbled across the window display at João Rôlo Couture in Lisbon, Portugal was princess dresses.

João Rôlo‘s dresses are so excruciatingly gorgeous they’ll make you immediately want to install a red carpet somewhere in your home just so you can flutter around in one of his feathered confections.

He opened his first store and his atelier in the 1980s and has risen to become one of, if not the most, prestigious Portuguese couturiers.

As soon as you enter João Rôlo Couture you’ll be enchanted. Jewel tones or candy colored hues bedeck each glamorous gown.

The only other approachable high end brand that made our hearts melt in the same way is Alexis Mabille‘s namesake shop which can be found in Paris’ Galerie Vivienne.

From the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed, not judged. In our case, Daniel Pinheiro eagerly greeted us as soon as we passed through the door.

Clearly we have a passion for all things fashion. Here are some of our favorite beautiful boutiques in the world.

As luck might have it, you might even catch a glimpse of the designer himself. João Rôlo can often be found buzzing around attending to one of his creations. During our visit he graciously stopped what he was doing to pop by and say hi.

You’ll swoon over each romantic detail and embellishment. All of the lace, flowers and embroidery you see on each piece is done by hand.

Even if you never get an invitation to a ball or a gala or Cannes, swinging by João Rôlo Couture in Lisbon is an opportunity to see how lovely a haute couture atelier can be.
