If a drive around the Icelandic countryside is in your future, chances are high that you’ll find yourself on the west coast of Iceland at Bjarnarhofn Shark Museum holding your nose and attempting to eat fermented shark meat. Thankfully, just a 20 minute drive north will put you in Stykkishólmur, where you can cleanse your palate with scoops of delicious ice cream at Ís Kofinn.

Ís Kofinn translates roughly to “ice cream lodge” in English. You’ll find Ís Kofinn right in the harbor next to the Ocean Adventures boat tour agency kiosk and across from Sjávarpakkhúsið restaurant. This little hut features a wide array of flavors ranging from your standard chocolate, vanilla and strawberry to a bunch of funkier versions of ice cream like licorice (although we have to say that licorice everything is pretty common in Iceland). We even spied something written on their board called strumpa in Icelandic (Google translate says that’s grass, but we didn’t get a chance to give that flavor a go).

Our favorite flavor by far was the blue Smurf ice cream. The critters in the bright blue ice cream are actually marshmallow pieces.

Clearly we have a special place in our hearts for ice cream. Curious about other crazy ice cream flavors we’ve taste tested around the globe? Here are some of our favorite ice cream places in the world.

Sounds weird, tastes great. We were also a fan of the vegan scoop we tried which was a brightly hued yellow passion fruit sorbet.

We also dove into a delightful flavor known simply as cookies. It is a tasty option if Smurfs or primary colored foods aren’t exactly your thing.

Ís Kofinn also has a yummy banana chocolate flavor we loved. We didn’t get a chance to try it, because we were stuffed, but Ís Kofinn also had another interesting option on the menu. It was something referred to as a fizzy drink called Appelsín. It was described simply as, “What is Appelsín? Is what will make you forget about Fanta.” Apparently Appelsín is a pretty typical thing to drink around the holidays according to the Iceland Monitor, “The Icelandic Christmas Drink: Malt & Appelsín.” Next time we’re in Iceland, we’re trying one of those carbonated orange flavored bad boys out too.

In addition to Ís Kofinn, here’s a list of other neat little local spots we love across Iceland.

Whether you’re curious about what a Smurf might taste like or just trying to rid your mouth of fermented shark flavor, Ís Kofinn is one little lodge in Stykkishólmur you won’t want to miss.
