Most epic love stories do not involve beer bellies, but this one does. Long long ago (okay, about three years ago) in a land far far away (let’s call it Wellington, New Zealand) a couple entrepreneurially minded restauranteurs (Shaun Clouston, Debbie Jones and Stephen Logan) decided to open a kick ass burger joint that we’re all fired up about.

Can’t Help Falling in Love – Diet Fries Are Half the Price of Fat Fries on Grill Meats Beer’s Menu

You can ease into the menu with a selection of beerginnings (popcorn fish with orange aioli and Japanese fried chicken with tonkatsu mayo plus lemon are just a few of the options in Grill Meats Beer’s starting line up).

The Souvenir Tee You Actually Want – At Grill Meats Beer Becoming a Vegetarian is a Big Missed Steak

We couldn’t pace ourselves, so we skipped ahead like giddy teenagers and headed straight into the “from the grill” and burger options.

You’re My Butter Half – A Bavette Steak Served with Garlic Butter at Grill Meats Beer in Wellington, New Zealand

Love at first sight began when we met a handsome burger named the devil’s advocate (beef, smoked cheddar, bacon, jalapeños, habanero mayo and devil sauce served with chili fries). It met its match when we paired it with a bavette steak that was served with chipotle, lime, garlic butter, portobello mushrooms, bacon and smoked cheddar croquettes.

Puppy Love – Manchego and Jalapeño Hush Puppies at Wellington’s Grill Meats Beer

We also fell head over heels for Grill Meats Beer’s manchego and jalapeño hush puppies. Since we’re a sucker for love stories, we couldn’t end our excursion without asking if we could swap out our burger’s chili fries for Grill Meats Beer’s fat fries.

You Must Be a Bacon Burger Because You’re Bacon Me Crazy – The Devil’s Advocate at Grill Meats Beer in Wellington

We were glad we followed our heart.

A burger per trip keeps us fat and happy. Here are some of the funnest burgers we’ve bumped into around the globe.

The fat fries are scrumptious.

For a Grill, Humor is Important in a Relationship

The casual laid back eatery that Clouston, Jones and Logan have created has a nice relaxed atmosphere which might be surprising if you’re only familiar with Logan Brown (their high end contemporary restaurant located in a former bank on Cuba Street).

Grill Meats Beer Received Our Stamp of Approval

The staff we encountered we helpful and even offered spot on recommendations for other places to eat during our stay in Wellington. In the end, we wish we could have had a more serious long term relationship with Grill Meats Beer, but long distance is tough.

In addition to Grill Meats Beer, here’s a list of other neat little local spots we love across New Zealand.

I suppose we’ll always have Wellington and boy did we enjoy our vacation fling while it lasted.
