There’s a magical bakery hiding in the buzzy Grandi Harbor (Old Harbor) area of Reykjavík, Iceland.

Every day, 17 Sortir (17 Sorts) churns out 17 different kinds of freshly baked goodies. The menu of sweet treats rotates each morning and new recipes are regularly added into the mix, but certain things never change.
In addition to 17 Sortir, here’s a list of other neat little local spots we love across Iceland.
Owner Auður Ögn Árnadóttir told FoodWaterShoes that she always uses fresh ingredients and that she strives to follow the high standards of baking her grandmother aspired to.

From traditional cookies with a twist to cupcakes with exotic fillings, you’ll have trouble deciding which of 17 Sortir’s decadent bites you’ll want to taste test first.

The name for the bakery, 17 Sortir, originated from a book by Icelandic Nobel laureate Halldór Laxness called Under the Glacier.

There’s a quote in the novel where a character states, “…Hér er ekkert fint undir sautján sortum.”
Clearly we love sweet stuff. Here are some of our favorite places to eat local and indulge in a sugar rush around the planet.
Which in English translates roughly to, “…Nothing less than 17 sorts is thought genteel here.”

While we were in the bakery, the owner let us in on a little secret.

Business is booming at the specialty cupcake shop, so much so that there are plans to open a second 17 Sortir location at the Kringlan shopping mall in September 2017.

Whether you worked up an appetite after wandering the biggest whale museum in the world (the Whales of Iceland is a must see in Reykjavík) or you’re gearing up to shop until you drop in Grandi Harbor, 17 Sortir is worth swinging by even if you only intend to window shop.
