There’s a magical bakery hiding in the buzzy Grandi Harbor (Old Harbor) area of Reykjavík, Iceland.
Every day, 17 Sortir (17 Sorts) churns out 17 different kinds of freshly baked goodies. The menu of sweet treats rotates each morning and new recipes are regularly added into the mix, but certain things never change. Owner Auður Ögn Árnadóttir told FoodWaterShoes that she always uses fresh ingredients and that she strives to follow the high standards of baking her grandmother aspired to.
From traditional cookies with a twist to cupcakes with exotic fillings, you’ll have trouble deciding which of 17 Sortir’s decadent bites you’ll want to taste test first.
There’s a quote in the novel where a character states, “…Hér er ekkert fint undir sautján sortum.” Which in English translates roughly to, “…Nothing less than 17 sorts is thought genteel here.”
While we were in the bakery, the owner let us in on a little secret.
Business is booming at the specialty cupcake shop, so much so that there are plans to open a second 17 Sortir location at the Kringlan shopping mall in September 2017.
Whether you worked up an appetite after wandering the biggest whale museum in the world (the Whales of Iceland is a must see in Reykjavík) or you’re gearing up to shop until you drop in Grandi Harbor, 17 Sortir is worth swinging by even if you only intend to window shop.
